Vice Chair

Sarah George, PhD

She/Her

Though trained as a mammalogist and evolutionary geneticist, Sarah George often worked with ornithologists through graduate school and gained a great appreciation for their research subjects:   Turkey Vultures, Red-tailed Hawks, Marsh Hawks (now called Northern Harriers!), Harris Hawks, among others.  After finishing graduate school, she oversaw both the mammal and bird collections at the Natural History Museum of L.A. County and learned to enjoy the incredible diversity of birds, from downtown L.A. peregrines to raptors around the world.  For 27 years, Sarah served as Executive Director of the Natural History Museum of Utah, and she was active in the national museum professional community, participating on national and international
association boards. She closed out her professional career as Chief Philanthropy Officer for the University of Utah, retiring early in 2023. Today, she serves on several local and national non-profit boards with causes she believes in passionately.

Sarah highly values HWI’s dedication to raptor research and public education.  It is only through an appreciation and understanding of the important role these magnificent birds play in worldwide ecosystems that we can help people make good and impactful decisions for the future survival of these species.
