Update: Manzanos Road Closed Again to the Public

This just in from the Forest Service: They have closed the road again due to concerns about road safety. -------------------------------------------------------------------

After several years of closure and hindering hawk watchers from visiting the Manzanos, parts of the area are now open to the public.

The lower portion of NFSR 245 and New Canyon Campground are both open for public use; however, Capilla Campground is still closed due to hazardous trees and additional work needed to bring the campground up to standard for public use.

The upper portion of NFSR 245 is open for walking, horseback riding and bicycling, but public motor vehicle use is restricted to allow the road to settle and protect the roadbed (the shoulders are still too soft to support vehicles and the National Forest Service (NFS) is concerned about cars sliding off the road ledge).

Although it's nearly the end of the season, NFS is currently working to ensure all areas will be ready and open for next spring.
