September 16, 2010 7:00 - 9:00 pm Flagstaff Chapter of the Northern Audubon Society (www.nazaudubon.org)
Join HWI Southwest Monitoring Coordinator Mike Neal as he presents a synopsis of our scientific efforts. The presentation will summarize HWI’s ongoing raptor migration monitoring projects in New Mexico, Texas, and spotlight its Grand Canyon, AZ project. The remainder of the program will focus on a new endeavor -- conducting riparian raptor surveys on southwest New Mexico’s Gila and San Francisco Rivers. A driving component of this project is an applied research effort called Project Black Hawk, which is directed at creating conservation and education solutions surrounding this unique raptor of the Southwest. Only about 400 breeding pair of Common Black Hawks are thought to exist in the U.S., as the remaining riparian ecosystems they inhabit continue to be degraded by human land use practices.
