What do We See in the Florida Keys?

Immature Bald Eagle

Not all raptors follow the same migration route.  Given their diverse flight styles, different species migrate using varying strategies.  Buteos (such as Broad-winged and Red-shouldered Hawks) have long, broad wings that they use to soar.  These birds usually choose migration pathways near mountain ranges to utilize the updraft coming off the ridge or migrate over land with highly developed thermals.

However, Falcons (such as Peregrine Falcons and Merlins) have pointed wings and strong flight muscles designed for powered flight and speed.  They do not rely exclusively on thermals or updrafts and often choose costal migration pathways following their shorebird prey using strong powered flight to cross large expanses of water.  What makes the Keys so special is that we see a combination of all types of raptors and possibly more Peregrine Falcons than anywhere in the world!
