Third Grade Children’s Day

On October 11th, 2000 Curry Hammock State Park was the site of the second annual Florida Keys Wildlife and Birding Festival’s Third Grade Children’s Day.

Ten classes from around the Keys joined a staff of volunteers to participate in a series of activities based on bird ecology, migration and conservation.   Students rotated though nine activity stations set up throughout the park.  Topics covered ranged from habitats and water conservation to migration flyways.

Due to the efforts of the banders, most students had the opportunity to see banded raptors up-close.  The combination of the activities and seeing live birds gave the students (and the adults!) a great understanding of local and national conservation issues relating to birds.
