The Florida Keys may be the most exciting location in the country to watch the migration of Falcons. Large numbers of Merlins, American Kestrels, and Peregrine Falcons pass through the Keys each fall en route to their southern wintering grounds.  Seventeen different raptor species migrate through the Keys including incredible numbers of Peregrine Falcons, and other species such as Short-tailed Hawks and Swainson’s Hawks that are rarely seen at other hawk watches in eastern North America.

The Florida Keys Raptor Migration Project (FKRMP) is a partnership between HawkWatch International and the Florida Audubon Society.  The goal of the FKRMP is to monitor populations of migratory raptors while providing high quality education to schools, community groups and the general public.

FKRMP observers count over 25,000 migrating raptors each fall.  The project also bands an average of 400 raptors of 10 different species each season. The FKRMP environmental education program reaches an average of 1700 community members, local students, and members of the general public each year.
