HWI is dedicated to the conservation of raptors through scientific study and education. During raptor migration, volunteers harmlessly trap and band thousands of birds of prey as they travel through flyways in Band closeupthe United States. Subsequent encounters with banded birds identify causes of raptor injury and death, and allow researchers to track migratory routes and connections between breeding and wintering grounds. This information is essential for monitoring the health of raptor populations and identifying conservation needs, and ultimately helps ensure the vitality of ecosystems for both raptors and humans.
