Utah State Science Core: ILO's
Objective: Students interview/shadow a real life scientist to find out what their work is really like.
Time needed: 20 minute in-class portion, variable at home portion, Job fair (some extra time required to analyze and discuss the results of the job fair)
Materials needed:
Best Season: anytime
Background information: none required.
Engage: Have your students view the Virtual Field Trip and take the survey at the end.
Explore: Have your students think about scientists in their lives. Do they know anyone who has a job in science? Who are they? What do the students think they do? Have the students arrange to meet the scientist. Before the meeting, have the students read at least three sources about what this job entails. Students should prepare a list of questions for your scientist.
Explain: Students meet their scientists and interview them.
Elaborate: Students prepare a "recruitment poster" for a hypothetical company, using the information from their scientist interview. Arrange the posters in a “science job fair.” Invite students from the school to come to the job fair.
Evaluate: Have your students create the evaluation form for visiting students. What kinds of things do the students want to know about their job fair? What do they want visiting students to feel, learn, or do? Have visiting students take the evaluation and vote for the job they think is most interesting. Discuss results as a class.
