Ways to Donate to HWI
General Support
General support donations provide maximum flexibility by allowing us to allocate money where it is most needed.
Conservation
Donations help support proactive programs aimed at reducing critical threats to raptors. These include our Wildlife Without Lead program, where we work towards prevention of wildlife lead poisoning through reduction of lead deposited in the environment from lead-based ammunition and tackle used in hunting and fishing.
Education
HawkWatch International requires a nominal program fee from schools to help cover costs related to our environmental education program. These expenses include bird care and housing, transportation, printed material, classroom props, and educator stipends. Many schools are unable to afford even the smallest of program fees that would enable their students to experience a live hawk presentation. Feedback from teachers and students convinces us that meeting a live bird of prey leaves a lasting impression on children. Please consider sponsoring HWI's environmental education program to make this unique experience available to all children.

$10 – Pays for a curriculum packet for a classroom teacher.
$25 – Feeds an education bird for 2 months.
$50 – Provides for an individual classroom presentation.
$250 – Supports programs for an entire grade level at a school.
$500 – Underwrites a monthly education intern stipend.

We will gladly schedule a program with a school of your choosing if you care to designate a recipient. Otherwise, funds will be used at HWI's discretion with priority given to schools with limited monetary resources.

Science
Our research focuses on long-term studies designed to monitor the status and trends of raptor populations, identify threats to raptors and their habitats, and help develop raptor-friendly strategies for managing ecosystems. Donations help support our standardized raptor-migration count and banding networks, nesting surveys, and satellite telemetry and stable-isotope analysis programs.
Science Endowment Fund
HWI was very fortunate to secure a $1 million endowment in 2002 to provide stable funding for our long-term migration research. In support of this gift and the donor's wishes, we are seeking complementary donations to demonstrate our commitment to further enhancing this fund.
Satellite Tracking and Stable-Isotope Research
Our newest $72,200 research grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) enables the continuation of two cutting-edge research endeavors that HWI has been pursuing for the last several years. These projects identify source populations and migration routes associated with several of our long-term raptor migration monitoring sites. We must know where migrants come from to accurately interpret the population trends revealed by our migration counts. Since 1999, HWI has been tracking via satellite migrating Red-tailed Hawks, Northern Goshawks, and Golden Eagles to study their migration habits and summer and winter ranges.

This new grant will support additional deployments at four project sites and enable an expansion to our newest migration site in Wyoming. Since 1998, HWI affiliates have emerged as pioneers in applying another complimentary technique called stable-isotope analysis to determine the natal origins of hawks observed at migration-monitoring sites. A 2003 NFWF grant allowed HWI to greatly expand this research to three species of western raptors. Our new 2004 grant enables continuation of this work, expanding the research to four new species and our new Wyoming project site.

To receive NFWF grant monies, we must demonstrate a 2-to-1 match of non-federal dollars or in-kind service. Half of this match will be met by volunteer service provided by our field crews. The second half must be monetary donations, hence our request to you for a special gift in support of this important research project.
